Community Initiatives

The Common Market leads and collaborates with diverse partners to improve food access and build health and wealth in communities throughout the Mid-Atlantic. Below is a list of our current initiatives including good food distribution, youth empowerment, healthy food in healthcare and supporting local food enterprises.

The Common Market seeks partners to join us in making good food accessible and affordable. We can provide a 25% discount on good food purchases to qualifying organizations that are:

  • Mission driven (nonprofit/501(c)3 or social enterprise)
  • Community-based and their impact is focused and targeted (neighborhood or community/population specific, not necessarily city, region or country-wide)
  • Committed to expanding food access, building health and wealth and/or alleviating food insecurity
  • Led by and/or works closely with community members most impacted by limited food access with a goal of leadership development and/or food sovereignty
  • Majority of food purchased with discount goes directly to community members most impacted by limited food access
  • It might be difficult for this organization to source from The Common Market without this discount in place.

Community Farm Stands

To bring a farm stand to your organization, please contact our outreach team at sales@thecommonmarket.org.

 

A farm stand is a temporary, on-site set up of fresh local foods for sale at your hospital, school or community organization. The Common Market Farm Stand is a completely flexible program where you can choose when your farm stand runs, how often, and what local products are best suited for your community members.

The Common Market Farm Stand program can:

• Help your organization plan and organize an on-site farm stand

• Supply seasonal ordering and pricing tips and promotional materials to get the word out

• Deliver fresh, sustainable, local products directly to your location!

Good Food, Healthy Hospitals

Good Food, Healthy Hospitals is a four-year, multi-faceted initiative to transform Philadelphia’s hospital food environment and bring healthier options to thousands of employees, visitors, and patients every day. Through semi-annual convenings and technical assistance, pledged Philadelphia hospitals are committed to making changes that promote health through patient meals, purchased foods, cafeteria meals, catering and vending.

This initiative is led by The Common Market in partnership with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health and Philadelphia healthcare institutions. It is made possible by funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Get Healthy Philly.

Philly Good Food Lab

The Philly Good Food Lab is a creative space for local food enterprises and entrepreneurs, anchored by The Common Market’s growing local food distribution business.

This 70,000 square foot warehouse space in eastern North Philadelphia is owned and occupied by The Common Market. We invite other food enterprises or other sustainable, like-minded businesses to co-locate with us in our facility.

Through this space sharing initiative, partners at the Philly Good Food Lab benefit from The Common Market’s existing food distribution infrastructure and responsible management. Our region will benefit from a flourishing ecosystem of local food enterprises.
